Small Claims Case Filing Changes

On July 1, 2005, the jurisdictional limit for small claims cases filed in the local courts increased to $6,000.00.  Previously, the law limited the amount of damages that could be awarded in small claims cases to $3,000.00.

Also effective July 1, when filing a small claims case, you must pay an additional $10.00 for each defendant after the first named defendant.  For example, if your small claim is filed against Mr. and Mrs. Doe, you are now required to pay an additional $10.00 filing fee for naming Mrs. Doe as a defendant.
